Gold Coast International Student Centre and the Government of Queensland, has the pleasure of inviting you to study in one of our schools, called "State High Schools" (SHS). Of what age can I study?
A.:  From the age of 14 until 18 years. The system of secondary education is divided in 5 levels, from year 8 to year 12. Year 8 is for students of 13 or 14 years of age, year 9 for students of 14 or 15 years of age, year 10 for 15 or 16 years of age, year 11, for pupils with 16 or 17 years of age, and finally year 12, which incorporates students between 17 up to 18 years of age. Some variations are possible in this table, for example: a student can have 16 years in year 11 and 17 in year 12.
How much cost to study?
A.:  It depends on the year that to enter. If it will be in the years of 8 to the 10, the student will study in the Junior category. If it is years 11 or 12  students study in the Senior category. The name of the program for international students is "Study Abroad". Prices are shown below:

Incidental costs
- Student studying in Australia on a Student Visa must have medical insurance (OSHC) for the duration of the course. For 2008 the prices in Australian dollars is:

Homestay:  in 2009 the fee  is A$ 230 per week – this amount is payable for the period of study in advance and is included in the quotation with the Letter of Offer.
Reception in the airport:  the cost is already included. A specific form on the details of the flight will after be ordered the processing of its application. 
Note: The paid value includes all the obligator costs of the course & books. Pertaining to school material, uniform is not included. Other incidental costs exist as for example: transport for school, optional excursions are not included in the tuition. 

How can I enrol?

1) Please print the registration form by choosing the school preference in the Gold Coast and the period that goes to study. Download the from: International Student Program Application Form   

2) Copy of the passport or Birth Certificate.
3) Certified copy of the academic school results for the last 2 years translated for the English
Applications will normally be processed in approximately 10 days. If the application is complete and the student meets the entry requirements, a Letter of Offer will be issued – this will contain any conditions that must be met, and will include an invoice for the fees to be paid.
 After the payment is received, and any conditions met, an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE) is issued. This document is used to apply for a student visa at the nearest Australian Embassy.

Complementary information:

Applying for a Student Visa:  Applications for Student Visas can be lodged at the nearest Australian Embassy. It is suggested that you contact the Embassy to establish how long it will take to apply for, and receive, your Student Visa.

Level of English: For entry to a high school programme, as a Study Abroad student, students need to show that they have studied and passed English in their home country – students who have passed English do not need to study SSPP.

To arrive in the Gold Coast: An Airport Reception service is provided from Brisbane (Brisbane Airport) and the Gold Coast (Coolangatta Airport). Coolangatta Airport is much closer to the Gold Coast – Brisbane Airport is an extra trip of around 1 hour by car.

Schedule: The classrooms in general start 8 and some schools at 9 depending on the number of lessons until 4 or 3 hs in the afternoon. Each school has a different schedule.  

Internet and email: All international students receive an account from email and can access the Internet in the school. They are encouraged to keep regular contact with their family for email.

Bank in Australia: When students arrive in Australia the school will provide advice on how to open a bank account .The Bank will supply a card for deposits and electronic account "EFTPOS".

Canteen: The canteens offer a great variety of snacks and some hot options, as well as fruits and  juices.

Student ID card: All the students receive a student identification card with photo. The identification card can be use for entry to theme parks, trips, transport and other discounts Tip: It is suggested that the passport and student identification are kept in a safe place and only used when necessary.

Resources of the school:  In most schools it is possible to make use of the movie camera, Laptops, projectors and digital camera of the school: Many schools have this material available for loan that could be loaned to the pupils.

Pertaining to school material: School materials can be available for purchase in the school at the book shop. Another option is to buy the school materials in a book shop off campus.

Uniform of the School: All the schools in Queensland require students to wear the uniform. Each school has a different uniform. The uniform can be purchased from the school (both new and used). School materials and uniforms can be purchased by credit card.

Additional Support Classes: Students who require additional support classes should speak with their International Coordinator.

First day of the school: On the first day of school students will meet with their International Coordinator – information will be provided on school facilities, subject choices, school rules and they will meet with other international students. An orientation is also provided to new international students.

To go and to come back of the school: Homestay will sometimes arrange to take the student to the school on the first day. When the student is accustomed to travelling to and from school alone, the student will make the trip by themselves. The homestay will provide information on how to catch the bus, go by bicycle or walk.

To work while Study: people granted students visa on or after 26/04/08 received permission to work. Students are able to work up to 20 hours per week on their student visa. Students should discuss this issue with the International coordinator at your school. You are not allowed to work until you have started your course.

Final notes and results: At the end of its program, the students will receive a bulletin report showing the notes that they received in the chosen subjects. This bulletin could be used in its native country to receive credits from the studied subjects.

Choice of Subjects: In the first week that to arrive you will have to make the options of subjects to be studied. If you have special requirements for study in your own country you should inform the school. For example Brazilian students are required to study Mathematics, English and Sciences, Geography and History, plus Physical Education. Some options of levels of difficulty in English and Mathematics exists. Example Math, B or C (one stronger than the other). The student will have to pass in all these subjects and if not repeat the entire year in Brazil.

Moving of Classroom: The students always move of classrooms depending on the options of the subjects. Students will received a schedule informing them of the subject, teacher and classrooms.

Note: The students must be present on the last day of the school to be able to receive the results. Students must not commit themselves to trips before the last day of the school – students must apply for approval to travel.

Aid in the school: Counselling services are available to students for assistance with choice of subjects, personal matters and other issues. The "Guidance Officer ' will be able to offer counselling in careers and pathways to further study. The coordinator of the Homestay and of English for international students (ESL) are also able to provide students with assistance and support. The nurse (School Nurse) will be able to help with problems in relation of the health.
